Nutrition and Metabolic Development in Mammals

Part of the book series: Human Nutrition ((HUNU,volume 1))

Abstract

As discussed here, development means the growth and differentiation of an individual. It is important to stress that all the information necessary for the finished product (the adult) is contained in a single fertilized cell. Why this cell starts dividing and differentiating is still a mystery. Basically, development consists of repression and derepression of certain genes. On the whole, development is a “one-way street.” Under ordinary circumstances, there is no return to younger stages, although this is not an absolute impossibility. Thus, it is possible to take the nucleus from an epithelial gut cell of a tadpole, implant it into a fertilized frog cell from which the nucleus has been removed, and obtain from this new cell a whole new tadpole (Gurdon, 1962). On the other hand, it is not possible to alter fully differentiated organs (e.g., the completed brain of a tadpole) once they are made.
