Nervous Tissues Isolated in Culture

  • Chapter
Metabolic Turnover in the Nervous System

Abstract

There would be no need for a chapter such as this—whose subject coverage must be eclectic rather than systematic—were it not that the study of isolated yet intact and functioning areas of the nervous system offers a kind of information that can scarcely be gathered in any other way. To cover with any completeness the areas of overlap between the fields of tissue culture and neurochemistry would be beyond the scope of this volume, and certainly beyond the capacity of this writer. A selection is therefore made of representative studies utilizing tissue culture methods to investigate a number of neurochemical topics.

Recent studies in which the author participated were supported mainly by grants from the NIH (NB-00858). AI-08521 and K6-GM-15, 372) and from the NMSS (Nos. 432, 599 and postdoctoral fellowships to coauthors).
