Abstract

As suggested by its name, the single main characteristic of chronic fatigue syndrome (CSF) is a severe long-lasting disabling fatigue. Both the etiology and pathophysiology of the disease are obscure. The fatigue may be accompanied by other chronic somatic symptoms of varying frequency and severity, and by flu-like symptoms (e.g. pharyngitis, adenopathy, low-grade fever, myalgia, arthralgia, headache) and neurophsychological manifestations (e.g. difficulty in concentrating, exercise intolerance, mental depression and a distrubance in sleep pattern (Holmes et al., 1988; Komaroff, 1993; McCluskey & Riley, 1992). Clinical examination and routine laboratory investigations generally yield no specific abnormalities.
