Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 67))

Abstract

Uncontrolled epithelial cell growth is a hallmark of many forms of cancer and, in the lung, the airway epithelium represents an important target site for initiation by environmental agents (1). Epithelial proliferation and hyperplasia are common sequelae of chronic irritation and inflammation, and thus have been linked to the promotion phase in multistage carcinogenesis (2). Understanding the local processes that provide a micro-environment selective for clonal explanation of pre-carcinogenic cells could therefore be useful in evaluating the complex relationships between inflammation and cancer.
