Regulation of Chloroplast Biogenesis

Abstract

In this paper we describe the early light-induced changes of the organization of the chlorophyllous pigments as etioplasts of dark-grown wheat leaves (Triticum aestivum) develop to chloroplasts. Based on results of both in vitro and in vivo experiments, we present our view on how changes in the state of protochlorophyllide (PChlide) and chlorophyllide (Chlide), and of NADPH-PChlide oxidoreductase (PChlide-reductase) are related to the transformation of prolamellar bodies (PLBs), and how the early stages of greening may influence plastid activities, like esterification of Chlide and translation of plastid-encoded proteins. The paper is focused on recent results, but some background may be appropriate.
