New Perspectives in the Assessment and Diagnosis of Combat-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Part of the book series: The Plenum Series on Stress and Coping ((SSSO))

Abstract

Although the psychological consequences of exposure to severe life Stressors such as war have been observed for centuries, the technical classification of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been documented in the psychiatric nomenclature only since 1980 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd ed. [DSM-III], [APA]). As a result, the development of criteria-based, formal evaluation procedures has been relatively recent. Nonetheless, a review of the literature on combat-related disorders shows that a number of researchers made significant early contributions in the definition of features now known to accompany PTSD.
