Abstract
The effects of consuming ω3FA extend beyond changes in plasma lipids, blood clotting factors, and alterations in membrane composition and function. The presence of ω3FA in cell membranes influences the entire gamut of eicosanoid metabolism with results occurring in systems as diverse as blood vessel walls, immune cells, skin, lungs, joints, kidneys, pancreas, and a variety of blood cells. Eicosanoids are involved in atherosclerosis, asthma, arthritis, diabetes, psoriasis, tumors, inflammatory conditions, septic shock, and possibly cancer (Simopoulos et al. 1991). To grasp the extent of such effects, an overview of eicosanoids and their actions is useful.
