Novel Aspects in Photosynthesis Gene Regulation

  • Chapter
Signal Transduction in Plants

Abstract

Probably more than 2000 nuclear genes code for proteins located in the plastids (Abdallah et al 2000). A common feature of many of them is that their expression is regulated by a variety of cell-internal and -external signals, such as light, phytohormones, biotic and abiotic factors, photosynthesis, metabolic conditions within the cell (organelle and cytoplasm) or the developmental stage of the plastids. All these signals initiate transduction pathways which ultimately operate at defined regulatory elements. This causes changes in transcription rates of the responsive genes, but effects also posttransscriptional processes. In this overview, we focus on the following aspects:

  1. 1

How can a signal be perceived at the plasma membrane?

  2. 2

How do plastids control nuclear gene expression and do higher plants posses chloroplast-localized response regulators?

  3. 3

We present three genes (AtpC, PsaF, PsaD) with unusual regulatory mechanisms.
