Genetic regulation of IgE: influence of genes and variations of genes (polymorphisms) on the propensity of producing immunoglobulin E (IgE) in humans.
Introduction
Atopic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and food allergy are based on genetic determinants with a reported heritability of up to 80 % (Cookson and Moffatt 2000; Vercelli 2008; Gould and Sutton 2008). Atopic diseases are typical complex, polygenic traits, which are believed to be influenced by the environment, gene–gene interactions, and multiple genetic variants. A large number of candidate gene studies have been conducted for atopic diseases, results of which were often inconsistent. The candidate genes that could be determined confer either a disease-specific risk or appear to be important for the atopic state rather than for a specific atopic disease.
