Definition

The developmental continuum is a dynamic process characterized by milestones and challenges that occur from infancy throughout adulthood. The interaction of typical developmental issues with ASD is complicated. Milestones may be reached earlier or later than typical peers and at an atypical rate or order; across domains, a scattered skill profile may also be noted. The challenges that an individual with ASD faces may mirror those of his or her typical peers (e.g., entering school, coping with bullying, developing self-image, managing life changes) but may be exaggerated or occur at different points in development. In addition, it is now recognized that ASD does not protect one against other possible diagnoses or challenges, such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and other co-occurring disorders.
