Abstract
Intra-oral deglutitive pressure phenomena has been the topic of fewer studies compared to the other members of swallowing apparatus. Available studies mostly focus on swallow-induced and non-swallow-induced pressures generated by the tongue. They also address the effect of gender and age but rarely the effect of disease on lingual pressure. Available studies, have described the existence of an infra- lingual pressure phenomenon generated by apposition of the muscles of the floor of the mouth and the inferior/ventral surface of the tongue, as well as the supra lingual pressure phenomenon developed by sequential contact of the dorsum of the tongue with the hard palate generating the deglutitive lingual peristalsis that propels the bolus into the pharynx. Deglutitive activities of the base of the tongue contribute to the swallow related pharyngeal pressure phenomenon and is covered elsewhere.
