Abstract
Most contemporary models used in assessing and understanding the phenomena of problem drinking are based on the belief that alcoholism is an individual problem. These approaches to care are based upon an understanding of physiological and/or psychological characteristics and their sequelae. Treatment usually is directed toward eliminating individual physical or psychological dysfunction and principally involves chemotherapeutic and/or psychotherapeutic techniques.
