Abstract
This presentation will describe trends and regional variation in cirrhosis mortality, examine the relationship between these temporal and spatial variations and the general level of alcohol use, and provide estimates of the contribution of alcohol-related cirrhosis to total cirrhosis mortality. The statistics employed all refer to death from this cause, which is the most accessible and reliable measure of the impact of cirrhosis. Estimating the incidence or prevalence of cirrhosis in general populations is not easy and, to the best of my knowledge, has never been attempted.
