Abstract
Antibodies are bifunctional molecules. Their primary function is to specifically bind other molecules at their antigen-binding sites. Secondary functions which may arise as a consequence of antigen binding can be one of any number of important biological events such as the fixation of complement or the binding to one of several types of cells. These secondary properties are usually referred to as “physiological” or “effector” functions, and the mechanism of how the immunoglobulin molecule mediates them is of great importance to immunology and medicine.
