Abstract

This brief survey of some recent developments should underline that a fundamental understanding of both macroscopic properties and molecular-level structure is a prerequisite for success in this field. The main source of understanding of monomolecular layers on aqueous surfaces is the methodology for measuring n-A isotherms. The renewed interest in monolayer phases, their phase transitions and stability properties has led to new results on the monolayer structure. The important role of metastable states for cyclic compression — expansion processes in biological systems is the starting point for a new understanding of the monolayer collapse in terms of a nucleation process. Recent results on molecular structure, morphology, and penetration of spread monolayers have been presented. The emphasis was on the application of refined spectroscopic techniques involving in situ methods. Further useful results have been obtained by characterizing monolayer morphology in the macroscopic range as well as in submicron dimensions.
