Abstract
The advances in DNA technology over the past few decades have significantly altered the range of investigations with all organisms. Genetic engineering is clearly still in its developmental stages, but a number of the new technologies can be incorporated into existing strategies for identifying important and desirable new material. In the case of higher plants, both the traditional breeding and the biotechnological approaches are directed towards the same goals. These are:
-
1.
To increase the knowledge about the way in which genes determine the observed phenotype
-
2.
To use the knowledge to identify and manipulate plants to meet particular needs.
