Abstract

Acute stroke is today the third commonest cause for death in the industrialized world responsible for 10–12 % of overall mortality. It is the single most common cause of permanent disability in adults. Approximately 15 % of acute stroke patients suffer from an intracranial bleed, while the remaining 85 % have an ischemic stroke. Approximately one in four patients die within 1 year of having an initial ischemic stroke and with 15–30 % left permanently disabled.
