Part of the book series: ILSI Human Nutrition Reviews ((ILSI HUMAN))

Abstract

Drinking involves the acquisition of an aliquot of liquid, its transport from the front of the oral cavity to the caudal oropharyngeal region and its swallowing. In addition to water intake, it also encompasses behaviours such as non-nutritive drinking (the ingestion of water to which a non-nutritive tastant has been added) and nutritive drinking (the ingestion of liquid food or sugar solutions) which may engage ingestive systems related either to energy balance or water balance (Mook and Kenney 1977).
