Repair of Incisional Hernias and Midline Defects

  • Chapter
Abdominal Wall Hernias

Abstract

The use of prosthetic materials in the treatment of incisional hernias is now well established, thanks to the efforts of J. Rives et al., R. Stoppa, and G. Wantz, who introduced these techniques in North America. Rives popularized the space posterior to the rectus muscle, first used for the insertion of a nylon sheet by D. Aquaviva and P. Mouret of France in 1948 for the treatment of incisional hernias. Both techniques avoid the peritoneal cavity whenever feasible.
