Abstract
The hypothalamic-pituitary axis regulates the production of thyroid hormones so that the serum concentrations of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) remain in a narrow range in the euthyroid state. These hormones have essential roles in growth; development; metabolism of carbohydrate, fat, and proteins; and adaptation to the environment. This chapter will focus on the production of thyroid hormones, hypothalamic-pituitary control of the thyroid, and the use of serum thyrotropin (thyroid stimulating hormone, TSH) measurements for evaluation of thyroid function.
