Abstract

The use of the chemicals for vector control in various regions of the globe is commented in the paper. The current trends in the World Health Organization policy for the application of diverse groups of pesticides against the vectors are discussed. The information on the residues of persistent organochlorine pesticides in the environmental media - air, freshwater, seawater, sediments and soil as well as the tendencies for their elimination in regional and global aspect is analyzed. The adverse effects for the living organisms as a result of bioaccumulation and biomagnification of those substances in the tissues are outlined. The conditions and the principles of the long range transport of the persistent pollutants in the environmental compartments are also addressed. Special attention is paid to the international agreements. The related conventions are discussed including the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Retrospective data on residuals of persistent pesticides in water and soil in Bulgaria are presented. It is concluded that there is a clear tendency for decline of the residual levels of ogranochlorine pesticides in the natural waters. Currently the relative rate of the positive samples for organochlorine pesticides is about 10% in comparison to the 70-s when almost 100% of the analyzed water samples in Bulgaria were positive. The decline rate of soil residuals is much slower as the expected one.
