Abstract
Adenosine and its nucleotides exert actions at numerous sites related to the circulatory system. They may play a role in the central neurotransmission (Stone, 1981), cerebral blood flow regulation (Winn et al., 1981), autonomic ganglionic transmission (Silinsky and Ginsborg, 1983), regulation of glomerular filtration rate and renin release (Spielman and Thompson, 1982), as well as dilate coronary arteries and inhibit myocardial contraction (Rubio et al., 1983). Within the vascular wall, purines reduce the release of norepinephrine from adrenergic nerves and relax vascular smooth muscle (Su, 1983). Some of these actions may possibly contribute to regulation of blood pressure and to pathogenesis of hypertension.
