Amplification of Chirality

Part of the book series: Topics in Current Chemistry ((TOPCURRCHEM,volume 284))

Abstract

The origin of biomolecular handedness known as homochirality in the animate world may be oneof the most puzzling issues among scientists. The cooperativity of amplification, switching, andmemory in biopolymers and synthetic helical polymers might be shared with ideas of a scenariofor the biomolecular homochirality, autocatalytic mechanism in chiral chemical synthesis, and bifurcationequilibrium mechanisms in crystallization of chiral crystals. This work focuses on several chiropticalamplification phenomena exemplified in optically active chromophoric helical polysilanes bearing chiraland achiral side groups, which exist in isotropic dilute solution, as aggregate forms dispersed inisotropic solution, in double layered films deposited onto a solid surface, in the thermotropiccholesteric liquid crystal film state, and ultimately by dictating invisible chiral weak and ultraweakinteractions at subatomic, atomic, and molecular levels.
