A Nested Comparison of Four Models of the Consequences of Role Perception Variables

Abstract

Using a nested models approach, four models of the outcomes of role perception variables - the Bedeian and Armenakis (1981) model; the Schaubroeck, Cotton, and Jennings (1989) model; the Wunder, Dougherty, and Welsh (1982) model; and a proposed model - are compared. Results suggest that both fit indices and individual path significance tests are required to determine model parsimony.

Post-hoc testing reveals that organizational commitment does indeed fully mediate the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intentions within this context. A direct effect between job satisfaction and turnover intentions has also been found lacking in other studies that included organizational commitment (Cho et al., 2017; Netemeyer et al., 1995). Furthermore, there are healthy levels of explained variance among the endogenous constructs.

This phenomenon is more prominent in the tourism industry, in which employees face problems such as heavy workloads, low pay, long and irregular work hours, and role stress (Burke, Koyuncu, Fiksenbaum, & Tekin, 2013; Karatepe & Karatepe, 2010; Kusluvan, Kusluvan, Ilham, & Buyruk, 2010; Ling, Liu, & Wu, 2017; Ross & Boles, 1994). Since employees' work stress affects work attitudes and behaviors directly (Jackson & Schuler, 1985; Netemeyer, Burton, & Johnston, 1995), which further affect customers' perceptions of service quality and satisfaction (Heskett, Jones, Loveman, Sasser, & Schlesinger, 1994; Karatepe & Tizabi, 2011; Li, Sanders, & Frenkel, 2012), it is paramount for tourism researchers and managers to identify stressors and their corresponding consequences to manage employees’ work stress better. One question on which researchers commonly focus is whether the influences of work stress on employees are positive or negative.

The scales demonstrated good fit indices within Unites States and 21 other countries. Netemeyer, Scot, and Johnston (1995) demonstrated that role conflict and ambiguity are empirically distinct from one another as well as from role overload. Role conflict was measured with three items which assessed the extent to which employees were involved in incompatible role demands (e.g., “I often get involved in situations in which there are conflicting requirements.”)
