Is role stress always harmful? Differentiating role overload and role ambiguity in the challenge-hindrance stressors framework
2018, Tourism ManagementCitation Excerpt :This phenomenon is more prominent in the tourism industry, in which employees face problems such as heavy workloads, low pay, long and irregular work hours, and role stress (Burke, Koyuncu, Fiksenbaum, & Tekin, 2013; Karatepe & Karatepe, 2010; Kusluvan, Kusluvan, Ilham, & Buyruk, 2010; Ling, Liu, & Wu, 2017; Ross & Boles, 1994). Since employees' work stress affects work attitudes and behaviors directly (Jackson & Schuler, 1985; Netemeyer, Burton, & Johnston, 1995), which further affect customers' perceptions of service quality and satisfaction (Heskett, Jones, Loveman, Sasser, & Schlesinger, 1994; Karatepe & Tizabi, 2011; Li, Sanders, & Frenkel, 2012), it is paramount for tourism researchers and managers to identify stressors and their corresponding consequences to manage employees’ work stress better. One question on which researchers commonly focus is whether the influences of work stress on employees are positive or negative.
