Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) bacterial and viral innate immune responses are not impaired by florfenicol or tetracycline administration
2022, Fish and Shellfish ImmunologyCitation Excerpt :Therefore, antibiotics can interact with immune cells and have an influence on immune responses/function [11]. However, as was mentioned previously, the literature contains contradictory information regarding the effects of antibiotics on the immune system of fishes, and potentially deleterious effects may make the fish more susceptible to secondary infections (such as those associated with viruses, parasites and fungi) because antibiotics are not effective against non‐bacterial pathogens [9,13,17–24]. Thus, we tested whether the most prescribed antibiotics in salmon aquaculture (tetracycline and florfenicol) affected the Atlantic salmon's capacity to respond to both bacterial and viral immune stimulations.
