Applications and evolution of melittin, the quintessential membrane active peptide
2021, Biochemical PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :In an older study, increasing concentrations of melittin, when incubated with chloroplasts harvested from peas, silver beets, maize, and wheat, decreased the ability of the chloroplasts to conduct photochemical reactions [193]. Melittin also appears to increase the production of inositol triphosphate when directly applied to plant cells, indicating that signal transduction pathways of plants may be dysregulated by melittin treatment [194]. From an ecological standpoint, a small study has also demonstrated that melittin exerted toxic and genotoxic effects against a microalgae species, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata [64].
Structural and functional characterization of Solanum lycopersicum phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase C2 domain
2020, Plant Physiology and BiochemistryCitation Excerpt :Antisense suppression of this gene inhibited growth and development of plants in the second generation, and was lethal as a homozygous recessive (Welters et al., 1994). PI3K has been linked to a diverse array of key cellular functions, including root nodule formation (Hong and Verma, 1994), nuclear cytoskeleton arrangement (Drobak and Watkins, 1994), vesicle formation (Matsuoka et al., 1995), chloroplast regulation (Bovet et al., 2001), regulation of transcription process (Bunney et al., 2000), regulation of stomatal movement (Jung et al., 2002; Park et al., 2003), root gravitropism (Joo et al., 2005), salt tolerance (Leshem et al., 2007), root hair elongation (Lee et al., 2008a), and pollen development (Lee et al., 2008b). PI3K is also required for interaction with plant growth regulators such as abscisic acid (Park et al., 2003) and auxin (Joo et al., 2005).
